2022年10月14日、Leaving Recordsからリリースされた Sam Gendel（サム・ゲンデル）のアルバム。14曲それぞれが、日本の伝統的な刺し子の文様に対応するという構成を持つ。縦縞、七宝、鳥襷、網目、鱗、籠目、矢来——並ぶのは着物や布に刻まれてきた幾何学の名だ。ただしレーベル自身がこの対応を「playfully ambiguous（遊び心をもって曖昧）」と説明しており、たとえば Kagome という曲が籠目の文様をどこまで喚起しようとしているのかは示されない。

録音の大半は、オレゴン州Columbia川の支流に浮かぶ小屋に組んだ仮設スタジオで行われた。ギターでメロディの素描を作ったのち、およそ五週間で録り切っている。その間、川の潮の満ち引きに身体が馴染んでいったとGendelは語る。サックス奏者として知られる彼が、本作の楽曲をすべてギターで書き起こしたという点も特異である。

ドラムは Craig Weinrib（クレイグ・ワインリブ）。それ以外の全ての演奏、録音、ミックスをGendel自身が手がけた。マスタリングはレーベル主宰の Matthewdavid McQueen（マシューデイヴィッド・マクイーン）。ジャケット裏の青鷺のドローイングは Marcella Cytrynowicz による。

「All Genre」を掲げるLeaving Recordsは、ジャズとヒップホップの双方に足をかけながらどちらにも収まらないGendelにとって、必然的な居場所だったといえる。本作はGendelの色彩研究であり、反復と逸脱を通じて、ノワール的で、ノスタルジックで、半ば幻覚的な、永続する薄暮のなかにある気分への傾倒を伝えている。

Playful, and yet radical. Hollow-feeling and cool at once. Which is why Gendel resembles both Miles Davis and John Coltrane. 2022, a cabin floating on a tributary of Oregon's Columbia River. He built a makeshift studio there and cut the record in five weeks, long enough to learn the river's tides. All fourteen tracks are named after sashiko patterns: vertical stripes, seven treasures, fishing nets, woven bamboo, bamboo fence. One is called Hishi-igeta — the same characters as the name of the building this shop sits in. But the link between title and pattern is never spelled out. Playing, or serious? The question stays suspended while the sound goes on in a permanent twilight.

Pairing: YIRGACHEFFE ARICHA. Dark-roast bitterness and body. Look into it long enough and it looks back.
