ロンドンのイースト・エンドに、Kansas Smitty'sというバーがある。バンド名もそこから来た。
現在進行形のジャズだ。100年前の録音を大切にすることと、今鳴っている音楽を聴くことは、矛盾しない。このバンドの演奏には、バーの熱気がそのまま入っている。酒の匂いと、人の声と、誰かが笑う音が。
コーヒーを飲みながら聴くには、少しうるさいかもしれない。それでいい。
コーヒーはmemento、あるいはマンデリン。今の空気を吸っている音楽に、合っている。
ロンドンのジャズシーンは今、世界で最も面白い場所のひとつだ。Kansas Smitty'sはその中心にいるバンドで、同名のバーを経営しながら演奏を続けている。
古典的なジャズの語法を持ちながら、音楽は今の体温を持っている。過去の名盤と並べても恥ずかしくない演奏力があり、しかし懐古趣味には陥っていない。ジャズが現在も生きている音楽だということを、この一枚は証明している。
